Let Us Cultivate Our Garden

2022, 3D modelling hosted on VRChat

Let Us Cultivate Our Garden borrows the titular quote from Voltaire's satirical novel Candide, implying to tend to our own scope of business and bother with ourselves less with the inevitable sufferings of the world. It can be understood that, if you take care of your own, the world will take care of itself. Using the motif of garden, this project examines the quote in the present day by exploring the notion of “cultivating our own garden under the context of an increasingly interconnected world”.

A digital reimagination of personal gardens is put together by populating each floor with photographs of real-life private gardens along HDB corridors and 3D modelled plants. The phenomenon of how personal gardens are encountered in share spaces almost echoes how the world is becoming more connected. Visitors are invited to bring together plants from personal gardens to build a community garden together, emphasizing the collective effort over the individual, in achieving a “well-cultivated” garden.

This project is supported by the Pluritopia Cloud Residency, and can be accessed via VRChat through here.
